JL W7 Subwoofer Drivers
The W7 embodies JL Audio's commitment to pushing the envelope of
speaker technology, with six patented technologies and a completely unique set of component
parts. Each W7 model has been meticulously engineered to reproduce sub-bass with extreme
fidelity at any volume level.
At first glance, you may only see a rather massive woofer, but as
you begin to analyze the technology and the performance envelope of a W7, you will realise that
they are much more than just another big SPL speaker. For JL, designing a pure SPL speaker,
with no regard to sound quality, would have presented a far lesser challenge than the
one they chose to undertake with the W7 project. Their goal was to design subwoofer
drivers that deliver immense output with an extremely high level of fidelity.
It wouldn't be enough for the speaker to sound great or be loud,
it had to do both. This goal required them to develop a deeper understanding of the inner
behavior of speakers, new and proprietary modeling systems and six new, patented or
patent-pending technologies. They could have made a good-sounding, big speaker without
going through any of this effort, but they chose to stretch their limits and devote
the time and resources necessary to create a real breakthrough.
Along the way, they encountered many obstacles and dead ends
which affected their design direction. They considered countless solution sets and
discovered, through modeling, experimentation and dozens of prototype generations, which ones
would help achieve their goal (and which would not).
The final product is a completely original design from surround to
back-plate, requiring a significant tooling investment for all of the component parts. Each W7
(8-inch version to 13.5-inch version) is a completely unique design and shares no major parts
with its siblings. Each motor and each suspension system is specifically designed and tuned for
each driver. If you consider the preceding, along with the fact that every part of every W7
(even the bolts and screws used to assemble the speaker), has been purpose-designed and
manufactured to their specifications, you begin to get a firm idea of their
commitment to this product. All W7 subwoofers are built to exacting quality standards
in their Miramar, Florida factory.

JL Stealthbox®
If you're like most people, you spend more time listening to music
in your car than any other place.
Adding a subwoofer is the single, most significant improvement you
can make to a car audio system. Not only do you get the benefit of the subwoofer's superior
bass performance, but with proper system design you also relieve the small front and rear
speakers in your car from the burden of reproducing bass. This makes them sound better, cleaner
and louder.
The only problem with subwoofers in the car is that they typically
take up a lot of room, which can be a big problem if you want to keep your vehicle's comfort
and utility intact. JL Audio's Stealthbox® subwoofer systems solve this problem once and for
all, while delivering a level of sub-bass performance that is way ahead of the curve. And, as
the name implies, no one will ever know it's there.
JL's engineers began the Stealthbox® design process by studying
the acoustics of the target vehicle and evaluating potential Stealthbox® locations.
Extensive testing took place with the goal of maximizing
performance while minimizing loss of vehicle utility and comfort. Then they choose
from their vast arsenal of acclaimed subwoofer components and their rather extensive
bag of loading techniques to produce the best possible subwoofer response for each and every
Stealthbox® vehicle. Prototypes are evaluated and fine-tuned to further improve sound quality,
output, cosmetics and fit. After a month or two (sometimes, three) of intense research, a
Stealthbox® was ready for production.
The result is a product that embodies JL Audio's passion for car
audio by exceeding the conventional limits of system design... Delivering performance so good
that Truckin' magazine declared: “You never would think that a single 10-inch woofer... in a
box made to blend in with the interior, could produce as much bass as a system with several
12-inch subwoofers...”
